Brief Analysis of Silicon Carbide Grinding Wheels and Corundum Grinding Wheels

Share:

Grinding wheels are composed of several parts, the most important component of which is the type of abrasive. The main abrasives are corundum, silicon carbide, diamond and cubic boron nitride. The abrasives are used to determine whether the specific abrasive is suitable for your workpiece and whether it is the most suitable for the workpiece, such as the grinding ability and processing adaptability of the workpiece material and the physical and chemical properties of the workpiece material.
The most commonly used abrasives are brown corundum (A) and white corundum (WA), followed by black silicon carbide (C) and green silicon carbide (GC), and the rest of the commonly used ones are chrome corundum (PA), single crystal corundum (SA), microcrystalline corundum (MA), and zirconium corundum (ZA).

Introduction of silicon carbide grinding wheels:
There are two kinds of silicon carbide: black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide.
Black silicon carbide contains about 95% SiC. It is mainly used for processing glass, stone, ceramics, refractory materials, non-ferrous metals and other materials with low tensile strength.
Green silicon carbide contains about 97% SiC or more. It is mostly used for processing cemented carbide, optical glass and titanium alloys. Due to its high hardness and anti-adhesive properties, it is suitable for finishing and super-finishing of workpieces.
Black silicon carbide is harder and more brittle than corundum-based artificial abrasives, and is suitable for processing low tensile strength metal and non-metal materials, such as gray cast iron, brass, lead and other non-ferrous metals, as well as ceramics, glass factory materials and other hard and brittle materials. Green silicon carbide compared with black silicon carbide, its purity, hardness, brittleness is slightly larger, suitable for processing hard and brittle materials, such as cemented carbide, glass, agate, etc., also widely used in measuring tools, cutting tools, mold fine grinding and aircraft, automobile, ship and other engine cylinder honing.

Introduction of corundum grinding wheel:
According to the different content of aluminum oxygen powder and the different auxiliary materials, it is divided into brown corundum grinding wheel, chrome corundum grinding wheel, white corundum grinding wheel. The rest of the commonly used are single crystal corundum grinding wheels, microcrystalline corundum grinding wheels, zirconium corundum grinding wheels.
Brown corundum grinding wheels have high toughness and are suitable for processing metals with high tensile strength, and are mostly used for the barren grinding of workpieces. Brown corundum is suitable for grinding metals with high tensile strength, such as carbon steel, alloy steel, malleable cast iron, hard bronze, etc. The grinding performance of this abrasive is good and widely adaptable, and it is often used for rough grinding with a large margin of removal, and it is cheap and can be widely used.
White corundum grinding wheels have slightly higher hardness than brown corundum and the abrasive grains are easily broken during grinding, which is suitable for precision grinding of high carbon steel, quenched steel.
Chrome corundum grinding wheels are used for machining of tools, gauges, instruments and threads. High surface quality.
Single crystal corundum grinding wheels are suitable for workpieces with high toughness, high hardness and easy burn deformation such as stainless steel.
Microcrystalline corundum wheels have good conformability and are especially suitable for shaping and plunge grinding of stainless steel and bearing steel.
Zirconium corundum grinding wheels are suitable for grinding austenitic stainless steel, titanium alloy and heat-resistant alloys. They perform well in heavy-duty grinding.

How to choose the grinding wheel size?
When grinding with coarse grit wheels, the productivity is high, but the surface of the workpiece is rougher; when grinding with fine grit wheels, the surface roughness of the workpiece is better, but the productivity is lower. On the premise of meeting the roughness requirements, coarse-grained grinding wheels should be used as much as possible to ensure higher grinding efficiency. Generally, use coarse grit grinding wheels for rough grinding and fine grit grinding wheels for fine grinding.

Selection of Atmospheric Hole Grinding Wheels
Atmospheric grinding wheels have the advantages of not being easily blocked during grinding, high durability and strong cutting ability. It is suitable for coarse and fine grinding of soft metals and non-metallic materials such as plastics, rubber and leather. Also, it has the feature of fast heat dissipation, so it has good effect in grinding some heat-sensitive materials, thin-walled workpieces and dry grinding processes (such as sharpening carbide tools and machine tool guides, etc.).
The production range of large-bore grinding wheels is as follows: abrasives are generally selected from carbide and corundum, such as commonly used black silicon carbide (C), green silicon carbide (GC) and white corundum (WA), etc. These abrasives are hard, brittle and sharp, with good thermal and electrical conductivity; abrasive size (36#~180#); bonding agent (ceramic bond); hardness (G~M grades); shape (flat, cup-shaped, bowl-shaped or disc-shaped, etc.) (flat, cup-shaped, bowl-shaped or disc-shaped, etc.); air hole size (about 0.7~1.4 mm).

The basic rules of grinding wheel selection are:
1) When grinding materials with high tensile strength, use abrasives with high toughness.
2) When grinding materials with low hardness and high elongation, use more brittle abrasives.
3) When grinding materials with high hardness, use abrasives with higher hardness.
4) Use abrasives that are less likely to be chemically reactive with the material being processed.

Note for correction of grinding wheels:
The grinding wheel should be dressed with a diamond pen with good wear resistance, a suitable edge shape and installation angle, and when the dressing amount is appropriate (the longitudinal feed should be smaller), it can make the abrasive cutting edge obtain good equivalence and reduce the surface roughness.
