Details about Corundum:

Corundum is the second hardest mineral in nature after diamond, and is one of the main rock-forming minerals. Corundum, the name of which is of Indian origin, is the mineralogical name. There are three main variants of corundum Al2O3 homogeneous. Corundum is second only to diamond and cubic boron nitride in hardness.
Corundum is a gemstone formed by the crystallization of aluminum oxide (Al2O3). Corundum mixed with metallic chromium is bright red in color and is generally called ruby, while corundum that is blue or colorless is commonly classified as sapphire.
Corundum is ranked 9th on the Mohs scale of hardness. It has a specific gravity of 4.00 and a lattice structure of hexagonal columns. Because of its hardness, and relatively lower price than diamond, corundum is a good material for sandpaper and abrasive tools.

Differences in hardness and toughness:
Hardness: white corundum > red corundum > brown corundum(white corundum is 9.0 brown corundum is 8.5-8.9, red corundum is 9.1)
Toughness: brown corundum>red corundum>white corundum


Different Composition:
White corundum: high quality aluminum oxide powder as raw material, white corundum by electrofusion refining crystallization. White corundum segment sand is generally 0-1mm, 1-3mm, 3-5mm, 5-8mm, physical and chemical indicators: Al2O3 ≥ 99% Na2O ≤ 0.5% CaO ≤ 0.4%, magnetic material ≤ 0.003%.

Chrome corundum: its composition is mainly α-alumina, also called red corundum, ruby. Nowadays, it is mostly artificial red corundum on the market. Red corundum is made of 22% chromium on the basis of white corundum, which is melted by electric arc furnace and has purple-red color. Hardness is slightly higher than brown corundum, similar to white corundum, microhardness can be 2200-2300Kg/mm2.

Brown corundum: common name is also known as adamantine, is made of bauxite, carbon materials, iron filings three raw materials in the electric furnace after melting reduction of brown artificial corundum, so this name, the appearance of brown, toughness, microhardness in 1800-2200Kg/mm2, bulk density ≥ 3.85g/cm3. brown corundum main chemical composition is Al2O3, its content in 94.5% - 97%, and contains a small amount of Fe 97%, and contains a small amount of Fe, Si, Ti, etc. Brown corundum is resistant to high temperature and refractoriness up to 1850℃, and is widely used as refractory and abrasive.


Composition Determines Different Droperties:
White corundum: white corundum is crystallized by electrofusion refining, high purity, good self-sharpening, acid and alkali corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, stable thermal properties. White corundum is slightly harder than brown corundum, slightly lower toughness, high purity, good self-sharpening, good grinding ability, low heat generation, high efficiency, acid and alkali corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and good thermal stability.

Brown corundum: in the application process has the characteristics of no explosion, no pulverization, no cracking, especially its cost performance is much higher than the traditional brown corundum, which makes it become the aggregate and filler of brown corundum refractory materials.

Chrome corundum: higher toughness than white corundum, slightly lower than brown corundum.

White corundum is suitable for the manufacture of ceramics, resin cemented abrasives and grinding, polishing, sandblasting, precision casting (fine casting special corundum), etc. It can also be used for the manufacture of advanced refractory materials.
