Moresuperhard Participation in A Doctoral Seminar on Utrasonic Vibration-assisted Grinding

Share:
Moresuperhard engineers attended a doctoral seminar on ultrasonic vibration-assisted grinding last Thursday, which focused on experiments related to ultrasonic-assisted grinding.

What is ultrasonic-assisted grinding?

Ultrasonic-Assisted Grinding is a technique that uses ultrasonic vibrations to assist in grinding, improving the efficiency and quality of the grinding process.
Basic principle: Ultrasonic-assisted grinding uses ultrasonic vibrations to act on the grinding process, which can reduce grinding forces, improve surface quality, increase grinding accuracy, and reduce problems such as tool wear and workpiece deformation. The ultrasonic vibration increases the grinding effect by stimulating the contact surface between the abrasive grain and the workpiece.
Application areas: Ultrasonic-assisted grinding is widely used for grinding of hard and brittle materials, such as ceramics, glass, PCD, etc. It has important applications in precision machining, high-efficiency machining and machining of workpieces with high surface quality requirements.
Advantages and benefits: ultrasonic-assisted grinding can improve grinding efficiency, reduce grinding force and grinding temperature, improve surface quality, increase tool life and reduce the risk of workpiece deformation and damage. It can also cope with some traditional grinding challenges, such as deep hole machining and thin-walled workpiece machining.
Implementation: Ultrasonic-assisted grinding can be realized by installing the ultrasonic device on the grinding equipment or by using a special ultrasonic grinding device for processing. The vibration frequency, amplitude, feed rate and grinding parameters are important parameters that affect the grinding effect.

The following experimental design workpiece is covered with a carbide coating on the surface of 304 stainless steel material using high-speed flame spraying.

The workpiece is clamped in the following way(see the picture below), the yellow part is the ultrasonic co-vibration device, the blue part is the grinding wheel, and the yellow part is needed to vibrate radially along the grinding wheel.

During the meeting, the professors and experts discussed several grinding methods mentioned in the references, including radial, tangential, and axial co-vibration methods. The meeting tentatively selected both axial and radial.

                              discussion content

The main contents of the meeting are for reference:
1: Discussion on the design of jig and ultrasonic resonator
2: The choice of bonding agent (resin) for the grinding wheel, the choice of medium hardness, and the modification of the grinding wheel size from 100 OD to 30 OD;
3: Feasibility of the proposal.
